    Italian excavations between the Via Appia and the Via Ardeatina on the outskirts of Rome, in an area densely occupied by the famous catacombs, have revealed an unusual and rare circus-shaped early Christian funerary basilica containing more than 1000 burials believed to be the church commissioned by St. Mark, who served as pope for 263 days in AD 336.
