El Pilar is a Living Museum and Laboratory drawing from Ancient Cultural Practices to create a Conservation Model for the Future of Civilization. In a region where a civilization once flourished our recent expansion threatens environmental integrity. Local cultural traditions speak to an intimate knowledge of the forest while the ecology of the forest speaks to a systematic cultivation by humans. The last native Maya reveal keen awareness of ecological complexities involving animal, plants, and people, clearly favoring forest growth. The Maya sustainable practices that demonstrate the mutual benefits of culture and nature are unknown to the world. Collaborative research on the culture and nature of the Maya forest promises to open new paths to knowledge and understanding that will create a conservation model for the future of our civilization.

The Megalithic Temples of Malta are a series of prehistoric monuments in the Maltese archipelago. Archaeologists believe that these megalithic complexes are the result of local innovations in a process of cultural evolution.[1][2] This led to the building of several temples of the Ġgantija phase (3600-3000 BC) and culminated in the large Tarxien temple complex, which remained in use until 2500 BC. After this date, the temple building culture disappeared.[3][4] The Ġgantija temples were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980.[5] In 1992, the UNESCO Committee further extended the existing listing to include five other megalithic temple sites. These are Ħaġar Qim, L-Imnajdra,[6] Ta' Ħaġrat, Ta' Skorba and Tarxien.[7] Heritage Malta today protects the sites, while ownership of the surrounding lands varies site-by-site. They are the oldest free-standing structures on Earth www.studymalta.eu

Filmed during a chilly afternoon in January 2010. The prehistoric standing stones of Stanton Drew lay dusted by snow as the Winter sun fades gradually into the day’s end. Painterly clouds, above, behind and around, move with delicate grace.
